Sandpiper Resort – Rowena’s Inn on the River

If you’re looking for a peaceful Fraser Valley escape that feels a little bit historic, a little bit cozy, and completely unplugged, Rowena’s Inn on the River is one of those places that quietly surprises you — in the best way.

I checked in expecting a charming countryside inn… and left already planning when I could come back.

Rowena’s is tucked away on a sprawling riverside property in Harrison Mills, about a 90-minute drive from Vancouver. The moment you arrive, everything slows down. The buildings have that old-world English manor feel, the grounds are wide open and green, and the river just quietly does its thing in the background.

It’s the kind of place where you take a deep breath without even realizing you needed one.

The Inn, the Cabins & That Cozy Factor

If you’re looking for a peaceful Fraser Valley escape that feels a little bit historic, a little bit cozy, and completely unplugged, Rowena’s Inn on the River is one of those places that quietly surprises you in the best way.

Rowena’s is tucked away on a sprawling riverside property in Harrison Mills, about a 90-minute drive from Vancouver. The moment you arrive, everything slows down. The buildings have that old-world feel, the grounds are wide open and green, and the river just quietly does its thing in the background.

I stayed in the luxury cottages on the property that’s part of Sandpiper Resort. One of the things I really loved is that there are a few different ways to stay here. I was gifted two nights in “Raven,” a 2-bedroom luxury cabin. From the large kitchen with plenty of space to prep my meals to the gas fireplace and beautiful views, two nights were not enough! The kitchen had all the small appliances, dishes, and cookware I needed.

The historic inn itself dates back to the 1920s and has that classic heritage vibe… think creaky floors (the charming kind), large windows, and rooms that all feel a little different from one another. Each room has its own personality, which I always appreciate way more than cookie-cutter hotel rooms.

If you’re travelling with a dog, you’ll be happy to know that Rowena’s is pet-friendly, which makes it a great option for a low-stress getaway with your furry friend.

Dining at River’s Edge Clubhouse

I dined at River’s Edge Clubhouse for breakfast and dinner, and the fresh gourmet dishes were spectacular! Some of my favourites are pictured below: the salmon and prawn linguine (with a golf course view) and a delicious frittata.

It’s honestly more than just a “hotel restaurant.” The menu leans toward elevated comfort food — West Coast-inspired dishes, seafood, and hearty options that feel right after a day outdoors.

There’s also an on-site golf course, which is a big draw for a lot of visitors. Even if you don’t golf, it adds to the property's peaceful, open feel.

One of the reasons I liked staying here is that you are close to so much.

You’re close to:

  • Harrison Hot Springs (about a 20-minute drive)

  • Local trails and river activities

  • Kilby Historic Site, if you’re into local history

  • Seasonal kayaking, boating, and sightseeing in the Harrison River area

But honestly? This is also the kind of place where doing nothing feels like a perfectly valid plan. Bring a book. Go for a walk. Sit by the river. Repeat.

A Few Tips If You’re Planning a Visit

  • Book early if you want a river-view room or a specific cabin, especially in summer or during fall eagle-watching season.

  • Fall and winter are especially cozy here with fireplaces, misty mornings, and fewer crowds.

  • If mobility is a concern, ask about room locations ahead of time, especially in the historic inn.

Would I Stay Again?

Absolutely… and I would recommend Rowena’s Inn on the River to anyone looking for a relaxed Fraser Valley escape that feels a bit different from the usual hotel stay.

Did you know this is also where many Hallmark movies are filmed? I will have to do a Hallmark Channel marathon to watch them now and see if I recognize the setting!
