I visited Italy in 2023, fifteen years after my first visit, so I needed to research before going. I thought I would share some tips on travelling to Italy to save you some time. By the way, the pictures in this article are from my 2008 trip... hence the lovely fashion.

It would help if you also decided whether you want to explore cities or rural areas, as each has unique experiences to offer.
Once you have decided on a general route, you can use online resources such as TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet to learn more about the places you plan to visit. You can read reviews from other travellers and browse photos that can help you visualize a place’s sights and sounds before you visit them. If you’re travelling from one city to another, look into train and bus services to plan your route and purchase tickets. Once you have your transportation sorted, you can move forward with planning your daily activities. In addition, be sure to bring items such as a hat, umbrella, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the country’s beauty. I bring thousands of books on my Kindle to read on the plane and download Audible audiobooks, as I prefer to close my eyes and listen to my books on the plane.
When deciding on the type of luggage to bring, weighing the pros and cons of your options is crucial. If travelling by plane, it’s best to bring carry-on luggage, as it will save you time and money. If travelling by train or car, a larger suitcase may be a better choice, as it will allow you to bring more items. Also, bring a small but sturdy bag for day trips. This way, you can travel light and explore the cities without dragging a large suitcase around.
Overall, it’s important to plan ahead when travelling to Italy for the first time. By packing the right items and having a plan in place, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience. With the right preparation and the right mindset, you can make the most of your first trip to Italy.
I'm a big fan of the Pacsafe brand and have purchased numerous items, including purses and backpacks. The three items I'll bring on this trip are a larger backpack for on the plane, a smaller backpack for during the day, and a small purse that will also fit inside a backpack. The larger backpack has two outside pockets for water bottles and is a bit roomier for my camera gear, so I may end up bringing this one if my second backpack won't fit in my carry-on. Stay Connected with the Right Cell Phone Plan
I like to stay in touch with friends and family at home when I travel, so I recommend you do the same if you're a first-time traveller to Italy.
There are many options, but my preference is to add a roaming package to my current plan simply. I use Telus (in Canada) as my service provider and have Easy Roam. For me, it's as simple as adding an Italy package for $15/day, and I can use unlimited talk and texts, and data from my current plan. If I hadn't added this, pay-per-use phone calls are $2 per minute, texts are $0.75 each, and data is $5 per MB. Check with your provider to see what they offer.
Depending on how long you'll be in Italy or if you’re travelling to other European countries before or after Italy, consider purchasing a European SIM card. This will provide you with a continuous connection across multiple countries, and you won't have to worry about whether your phone will work.
Regardless of the plan you choose, ensure that you understand the terms and conditions of service before making a purchase. This will help you avoid unexpected surprises when travelling in a foreign country. With the right cell phone plan, you’ll stay connected and have a stress-free, memorable trip to Italy.
